Simon Terodde: Anticipate those situations and be in the right place

It was the type of goal that Simon Terodde has scored so often in his career. In the 40th minute, Schalke’s number 9 found himself in the perfect position for any centre forward. Tobias Mohr whipped in a dangerous cross, which Terodde let run through to Kenan Karaman. FC Twente’s Gijs Smal couldn’t get the desired connection on his clearance and the ball fell into the path of the skipper, who smashed it past Lars Unnerstall from close range.

“I try to anticipate those type of situations and be in the right place,” said Terodde, who got his second goal of the pre-season in the 2-2 draw with FC Twente on Saturday afternoon.

The guests on top in the opening stages

The skipper’s goal put Schalke 2-1 ahead against the Dutch side, who caused the Royal Blues some problems in the early stages. “You could see, especially in the first quarter of an hour, that Twente can play good football and switch up their positions,” said the striker. “We then adjusted to that and got ourselves into the game after 15 or 20 minutes,” said Terodde.

It was important for the new signings to get a feeling for what can happen inside the stadium

Over 30,000 fans were in attendance at the VELTINS-Arena for the final friendly before matchday 1 of the 2. Bundesliga season against HSV (Friday, 28th July, 20:30 CEST). “It was important for the new signings to get a feeling for what can happen inside the stadium. These are the experiences that players can take with them,” said Schalke’s number 9, who described the friendly against FC Twente as a “good test” ahead of the clash in Hamburg.

Travelling to Hamburg full steam ahead

Simon Terodde

Although Simon Terodde stated that his side are in a “good position” after their solid overall performance against the Dutch side, the veteran made it clear that the Royal Blues still have some things to work on over the coming days. The team needs to be more aggressive in the duels and tighten their grip on the opponents. The players and the staff will now be working hard this week to make sure they can “travel to Hamburg full steam ahead.”
